Hometown:

Interest in Mining and/or History:
I have been interested in mining ever since moving to Fairplay, Colorado in the late 1970s. There I worked for the local newspaper, the Fairplay Flume and one of my favorite aspects of the job was doing a column called '100 years ago' which talked about all of the old mines from the days. I got to know a lot of the old timers, sadly none are still around, Tip Edwards, the Deacon, others whose name I can't recall right now. I started prospecting and staked a few claims of my own. Because of my second wife's inability to breathe at altitude I had to move to Seattle for 9 years. Then when our marriage fell apart I came back to Colorado and filed a claim on one of my old claims that had gone back for assessment. That claim is in Mosquito Gulch and the road to the Orphan Boy runs right through it.
Have you visited the Colorado Rockies:
I lived in Fairplay, Alma and Jefferson Colorado for some years. I am in the Denver area now but I try to get to the mountains as much as I can.
About Me:
My day job is in security, but I am also a writer as well as a 'weekend' prospector.

What Readers are Saying about Orphan Boy, A Love Affair with Mining

"The Orphan Boy is a wonderful story that provides a glimpse at early mining and the contempory experiences of a family as they reopened a old mine. It's a fresh look at Colorado History and an intriging tale on modern day mining."
Chuck Digby

"Hi Mr. Young
Just finished reading your book and would like to tell you how much I enjoyed it. It is great to have such wonderful memories of your Dad and the times you shared at the mine. My background is in geology also and I did some mining in the San Juans about 35 years ago. I must admit it has always been a dream of mine to own a small mine such as the Orphan Boy where I could go play in the summer and relive my first love of mining and being underground. Maybe we could come out next summer and visit the Orphan Boy and possibly scrounge in the tailings for a day or two. It would be great to see the subject of the book. Are there still any small mines for sale around there?
Thanks again for the great reading. Hope to hear from you about a possible visit to the mine area.
