On Mining and History
Mining is one of the basic industries along with agriculture. Without the products from either of these industries, civilizations would cease to exist as cohesive units.
Both of these industries produce the raw materials that we need to maintain our standard of living on a global scale. In fact, the minerals in the ground around the world are as necessary for life to exist as water itself. We often hear of mining processes polluting water supplies. However, water purcolating through the rocks below ground can be and is purified as it moves through the different strata.
It is my opinion the more we know about both history and the natural processes taking place in our world, the better prepared we are to make decisions affecting the world around us.

Just finished reading your book and would like to tell you how much I enjoyed it. It is great to have such wonderful memories of your Dad and the times you shared at the mine. My background is in geology also and I did some mining in the San Juans about 35 years ago. I must admit it has always been a dream of mine to own a small mine such as the Orphan Boy where I could go play in the summer and relive my first love of mining and being underground. Maybe we could come out next summer and visit the Orphan Boy and possibly scrounge in the tailings for a day or two. It would be great to see the subject of the book. Are there still any small mines for sale around there?
